Announcing a Very Significant Single-Artist Auction Retrospective: David Rankin- Five Decades

Artmarketspace is delighted  to be working with connections of New York based Australian artist David  Rankin, in staging a new market concept: A Single-Artist Auction Retrospective

Auction being  held on Sunday 29 November online  at artmarketspace.com at 5pm AEST.

This curated  auction comprises 11 fine works that span each decade of the artist’s career starting in the 1960’s  in Australia and ending up to the early 2000’s  in New York, where David Rankin now lives with his wife, the celebrated author Lily Brett.

Each painting carries  a sensible and conservative estimate, which will offer good buying  opportunities. The auction includes rarely seen early and mid-career works that come direct from the  artist’s own studio in New York. Each painting has been  carefully selected from the artist’s studio, as not only an excellent example of the artist’s work, but also as representative of David Rankin’s thoughts, developments, growth and understanding, which are reflected in the paintings of  each era.

David  Rankin will himself participate in a live video link event with Artmarketspace  CEO Lee Steer on Wednesday 25 November at 11am AEST,  where  the  artist will interact with art-collectors in Australia from his Shelter- Island studio in NYC.

In a  series of personal and revealing videoed interviews, which have  been filmed at his Shelter Island studio, David Rankin will discuss each  decade of his career. These videos will be released each week by  Artmarketspace leading up to the auction.

About David Rankin:

David  Rankin was born in England in 1946. His family migrated to Australia in 1948 when David was 2.He grew up in the semi-rural outskirts of Sydney. Of his childhood  here Rankin once commented: “I  grew up in Australia. It was  all sunshine and Sao biscuits. And I  was  blessed to have a teacher in my primary school who gave me a book  and who said, You draw very well. You should read this book. It was a biography  of Leonardo da Vinci.”

From  that point to this day, his life has always been about art and his achievements  have been significant and far-reaching. Rankin has received many accolades including winning the  prestigious 1983 Wynne Prize, the famous landscape prize in Australia, which he  was awarded at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Rankin  represented Australia in the UNESCO 40th Anniversary Exhibition. The  exhibition  began in Paris and toured the world for over twenty years. In one of David  Rankin’s first exhibitions in New York, the New York Times said “David Rankin is a gifted painter with something to say.”

In  this auction we trace the five decades and chapters of Rankin’s working life from the 1960’s to the 2000’s, which are marked  by his growing up in Australia, tracing his ancestry back to Ireland  and that of his wife the well-known author Lily Brett to  Jerusalem. Rankin moved to the US in the 1980’s  as a very high profile Australian artist and settled in New York, where he has  continued to explore the emotional and intellectual themes that imbue hispaintings. Now resident in NYC he paints at his studio on Shelter Island and  continues to exhibit in Australia and Internationally on a regular basis.

Dore  Ashton, the highly acclaimed New York art critic, in her book called “David Rankin The New York Years”, wrotethat  “David is an  exceptionally intellectual artist who is extremely alert to many currents in  the history of art, philosophy, and literature”.
